The Class of 2016 convocation was held on October 3, 2016 at Mansoor Hotel. On this Monday morning, graduates were joined by their families and friends to celebrate their achievements. Excitement and pride radiated from the faces of the families and teachers of the graduates, making for a truly joyous event.


EAU was honored to share this occasion with government delegates from Somaliland, Djibouti and Ethiopia, political party leaders, NGO representatives, hospital representa-tives, the Vice President of Somaliland Abdirahman Abdillahi (Saylici), and the Minister of Education and Higher Education Abdillahi Ibrahim Habane.

The convocation started off with a short recitation from the Holy Quran by Sheikh Muhammed Muse, followed by a speech from the Chancellor of Edna Adan University, Edna Adan Ismail. She started off by greeting all guests in attendance and congratulating the graduates on the completion of their degrees and diplomas. In her speech she advised the graduates not to take their education for granted and rather than using their knowledge just as a means of payment, to use their skills and knowledge to better Somaliland and humanity as a whole. Finally, the Chancellor reminded the graduates that she taught them to always treat all people who come to them for help; to serve those who can and cannot pay, and to ultimately treat all patients professionally with dignity, and respect.


Following the Chancellors speech, EAU’s President Mohamed Hussein Osman gave a speech congratulating the graduates on reaching their goals and provided information about the developments being made at EAU. The President stated that EAU’s purpose is not to take in a large number of students, but rather to provide students with quality education in health-care that meets the needs of the country.
There were speeches from the Vice President of Somaliland Abdirahman Abdillahi (Saylici), and the Minister of Education Abdillahi Ibrahim Habane. They both stated the importance of pursuing higher education and working towards Masters and Ph.D. degrees as it will al-low the graduates to reach their goals more easily and quickly. Both expressed their sincere congratulations to the graduates on their accomplishments and gave their well-wishes for them as they move onto the next step in their careers.


number of awards of appreciation were handed out to outstanding individuals for their hard work, and their contribution to the success of the hospital, and the training of students. These awards were presented by Somaliland’s Vice President, Abdirahman Saylici to doctors working or volunteering at EAUH, EAUH guest and foreign lectures as well as representatives from Kijabe Hospital, Manhal Hospital, Hargeisa Group Hospital, the Fistula Foundation, SOMDEV, Dahabshiil and Telesom. The Somaliland Vice President and Minister of Education were also recipients of appreciation awards.
This year the student with the highest average was presented a certificate for their achievement. Nawal Moumin Diiriye from the faculty of Midwifery was the recipient of this award. She gave a short speech at the convocation thanking her teachers and Edna Adan for encouraging her and providing her with the tools to succeed.
The ceremony concluded with 265 graduates walking the stage. It was a truly inspirational moment as many graduates were the first in their families to complete post-secondary education. EAU wishes the graduates the utmost success in their future endeavors!
